"Fizzingly
energetic cast and snappy direction"
NZ Herald
That's
right the smash-hit rock musical that has been delighting audiences
the world over for the past 30 years has risen again!
The
Real Theatre Company is delighted to announce that due to the
overwhelming success of its sold-out 2003 season of Godspell,
it will once again stage this infectious musical that explores
the life's teachings of history's most famous man, Jesus Christ.
The
Beaumont Centre in central Auckland will house this "humorous,
colourful, family friendly show" (NZ Herald) as the ensemble
cast take the audience on a roller-coaster ride through the parables
of St Matthew as told through story-telling, mime, puppetry, acrobatics
and song. Some of New Zealand's hottest young talent will make
the gospel leap off the page to get your toes tapping and your
fingers snapping.
"The
ensemble singing was terrific" (NZ Herald)
The
piece will once again be directed by David Coddington, one of
Auckland's most respected and experienced practitioners. Coddington
has been directing since the early 80's and has amassed a very
impressive CV which include smash hits such as; Ladies Night,
Kiss of the SpiderWoman and Equus.
Taking
the musical direction helm is Simon Walter, an up and coming
musical professional who is also keyboard 2 on Evita.
The
choreography will be by Peter Kemble, an incredibly experienced
dance teacher who has worked on numerous shows, TV productions
and films including the telefeature I Love and Lucy and with
the Auckland Blues Cheerleaders. Finally Sarah Burren will once
again design the show, lending the same prowess to Godspell's
costumes that she did as couturier to Princess Diana and Sarah
Ferguson.
The
cast of Godspell, just as with the original first performed
exactly 30 years ago in New York, is filled with energetic young
performers on the way to being leaders in their craft. Kane
Parsons, The Rocky Horror Picture Show (ATC), Hair (ATC) once
again lends his full-length dreadlocks to the role of JC and
leads the cast through the parables that he tells.
Dancer
and musical veteran Tim Minturn, Sunset Boulevard, The Sound
of Music, The Boy from Oz is Jeffrey whilst composer and actor
Fleur Ritchie, Under Milk Wood (London), Ugly Shakespeare Company
lends her considerable talents to Gilmer. Irreverant comic Trygve
Wakenshaw, Happy Hour for Miserable Children (Best Comedy 2004
NZ Fringe Awards), The Magic Chicken, The Butcher's Daughter
goofs up the character Herb as Cat Gwynne brings the character
Peggy to life. Diva in the making Tanya Steen, who has wowed
Christmas in the Park crowds, will portray Robin, while Jacob
Tamaiparea and Melanie Himiona bring Lamar and Joanne alive.
"There
are modern pop culture references littered along the way from
The Simpsons to The Lord of the Rings to Steve Irwin (The Crocodile
Hunter). " NZ Herald
